As a result of the strong support from our benefactors and friends
in recent years, the Foundation has expanded the scope of its
response.
Since 2000, The Frances Pope Memorial Foundation has committed to
provide funds to The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
Department at NYU Medical Center to keep a full time
Fellow on staff. This person provides invaluable "hands-on" care
for children with cancer and blood disorders under the
supervision of faculty who are Board-Certified
Hematologists/Oncologists.
In addition, we continue to support The Andrew Baeumler
Technology Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center .
Established in 1999 by The Frances Pope Memorial Foundation, this
program, named in memory of teenager Andrew Baeumler, affords
children the opportunity to use computers and explore the
Internet during their hospital stay. The children have access to
communicate with other children and share their experiences
through this new medium. Andrew Baeumler was one of "our kids"
for two long years. Andrew's love of computers often helped him
divert his pain and enabled him the ability to communicate,
continue to learn, and dabble in his favorite hobbies,
especially trading comics and baseball cards. It offered him
companionship and comfort during his treatments in isolation
units.
The Foundation has made special grants to The Stephen D. Hassenfeld
Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at New York University
Hospital. This assisted the Center in its own response to
families of children with cancer and other blood disorders. We
are very proud to work with the Hassenfeld Children's Center as
they continue to raise awareness of the extraordinary needs of the
families they serve.
